Website transfer from http to https

36 0 comments

We have several pieces of advice for you if you want to transfer your website from http to https protocol. Nowadays, many websites use personal transfer of data (login, password, or payment information etc.), so the actual question is website transfer to the safe data communication protocol or HTTPS.

Firstly, we need to understand what transfer to HTTPS from HTTP is

After transferring, a website address will not be changed but a prefix of it will be. For example: it looked that way before the transfer: httр://site.com and now it looks like httрs://site.com. Instead of it search engines will see two different websites. That’s why it is not so easy. So, how to transfer your website from http to https safely?

The first step: Website preparation

You need to fix some problems on your website before the transfer:

  • Replacement of internal linking of references from absolute to relative;

Relative links can be two types: relative instead of domain (httрs://site.com/about/ — absolute, /about/ — relative) or relative instead of protocol (httрs://site.com/about/ — absolute, //site.com/about/ — relative). You need to use the last one because there’s no matter what type of protocol you use, people always can find it.

  • Correction of media content attachment;

Check what content do you use on your website (images, videos, presentations) and what protocol do you use for requesting this content. You need to transfer everything here to relative addresses too and your media content will load from the safe protocol after the transfer to HTTPS.

  • Make connection of external scripts.

Use relative url addresses for external scripts. It’s important for Live internet, Google Analytics, JavaScript libraries etc.

The second step: Install SSL-certificate

After finishing all preparatory works with your website you can do installation and setup of your SSL-certificate.

  • Choose the right SSL-certificate for your website.

There are several types of SSL-certificates (normal, Extended Validation, WildCard, with the support of IDN). You can read more about them on the Internet and choose the right one for your website.

  • Install the certificate on your server.

A lot of hosting providers give users an opportunity to install the SSL-certificate easily and quickly in the management panel. You can contact support of your server if you have some problems with it.

  • Check the availability of the website using HTTPS protocol.

After installation of the SSL-certificate, make sure your website is available, using both protocols - HTTP and HTTPS.

The third step: website configuration

After successful second step and right installation of the SSL-certificate, you can work with your website.

  • Configuration of the directive “Host” in the file robot.txt.

It will help search engines find only one website, using one protocol. Write it in the robot.txt file.

  • Correction of all errors.

Check all links, availability of the website, right redirecting etc.

So, that’s all thet you need for transfer of your website to the safe protocol HTTPS. Just wait for deindexing your website and feel proud of yourself!
